Recently, The Scots College had an insightful Q&A with the Head of Technology and Applied Studies (TAS), Mr Tony Shen. Mr Shen provides first-hand insights into the dynamics of his department, a day in a life of a TAS teacher and what sets apart TAS at The Scots College.

Question 1: Why TAS? What made you decide to teach TAS?

Most subjects in the TAS department are project-based learning which engages students in rich and authentic learning experiences. True learning happens when students rely on their previous experience, apply existing knowledge, identify what they do not know, then build on their knowledge and experience to solve problems. This can happen over a few weeks in their early years, or over a 12-month period in their final year of study. The more responsibility students accept, the higher the challenge they set, the greater the learning curve. While it is rewarding to finish your learning with a great, innovative product, the true success – and achievement – is the journey. Being a part of this journey, helping students see what nobody else sees, is what made me decide to teach TAS at Scots.

Question 2: What is your most memorable TAS teaching moment?

Seeing the smile and sense of achievement on a student’s face when they finish their project, reach their goals, and are proud of the end product and their journey.

Question 3: How would you describe a typical day for a TAS Teacher at Scots?

I plan each day against my timetable. By recess, however, I throw that plan out the window because of the unexpected ideas, requests, and assistance students require, to guide them to solve their design problems. Although every day may appear different, it is dynamic, filled with satisfaction and rewards.

Question 4: What opportunities does your department offer potential staff?

The TAS department is passionate about design and enthusiastically teaches Junior and Senior learners to think outside the box. As a Scots TAS teacher, you will not only have the opportunity to be part of a student’s unique journey of exploration but be encouraged by supportive colleagues to extend past your own comfort zones.

Question 5: What sets apart a Scots TAS student? How would you describe them?

Our students’ ideas are always refreshing and wonderfully unexpected – they are what brings me back to the classroom each year. It is humbling to see them start off with what they don’t know, but willing to push ahead to take a risk, put in the hard yards and giving things a go.

Question 6: What sets apart a TAS role at Scots?

TAS is one of the most dynamic subjects at the College. Specialisations range from Engineering Studies, Computer Science to Design Technology and Food Technology. Throughout the TAS department you will have the opportunity to teach various disciplines, not just the one subject. To top it off, while teaching at Scots, you can be a part of countless professional development journeys that help develop boys’ education and shape their character into becoming fine young men.
