From humble beginnings in 2008, ScotsFest has grown from a short film showcase to a complete festival of the arts in 2017, displaying a range of art installations, music compositions, drama devising, as well as students working on their major HSC works. Taking place on Friday 19 May, the festival gets underway at 8:40am and continues through until dark for the annual ScotsFest Short Film Festival.
“2017 marks the further development of ScotsFest, with the open-air cinema format returning, but with the film festival now part of a much bigger College wide Creative Arts festival celebrating the work of all students from Transition to Year 12 in Music, Drama, Visual Arts and Media Studies,” remarked Ms Andrea van den Bol, Dean of Creative Arts at The Scots College.
“Visitors to this year’s festival are welcome to walk around the College and into any ScotsFest classroom throughout the day to view artwork, speak to students or staff, or even take photographs,” commented Ms van den Bol. All guests will receive a program outlining the day’s events, as well as the opportunity to be taken on a guided tour by one of the Senior Arts students.
“The Creative Arts faculty at Scots is large, vibrant and energetic and full of staff and students who go on extraordinary adventures in discovery, exploration, collaboration and experimentation on a daily basis. It is our hope that ScotsFest will provide our students with a platform to showcase the amazing work they do and give them a taste of the public nature of a career in the arts.”
The festival will culminate in the annual Scotsfest Film Festival. Supported by live rock bands, the short film festival will be played on the main oval as the sun goes down and will be adjudicated by media industry experts and hosted by a special mystery guest.
This year, attendees of ScotsFest will also have the chance to hear from a panel of Australian and international experts who will address the topic of the validity of arts in a boy’s education.
