Scots Pipes and Drums to perform at the biggest tattoo ever
The Scots College Pipes and Drums will once again be performing with the world's best, at the 'biggest tattoo ever to be staged' - The Edinburgh Military Tattoo - on 4 to 7 February at the Sydney Football Stadium.
This follows the band's performances at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo - A Salute to Australia in 2005 in Sydney which was attended by over 150,000 people.
The Edinburgh Military Tattoo celebrates its 60th anniversary year and this year's show, entitled 'The Edinburgh Military Tattoo - Celebrating 60 years of Valour, Mateship, Glory' will feature over 1,500 performers from international bands including Massed Pipes and Drums and Highland Dancers from the UK, USA, Switzerland, China, Norway, Russia, Trinidad and Tobago and New Zealand, as well as Australian bands from each of the Defence Forces and from every state.
As it's only the third time the event has ever been staged outside of the Edinburgh Castle, a $1 million Edinburgh Castle replica will feature as an atmospheric backdrop to the event.
The award winning Scots College Pipes and Drums started in 1900 and there are now over 200 boys learning to play or playing the bagpipes or drums. Boys voluntarily join the Pipes and Drums and often spend five to six years playing the instrument of their choice. They can learn piping or drumming as a 2 Unit Music Subject in the Higher School Certificate.
The band were the first ever juveniles to play at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in Scotland in 1973. They continue to wear the tartan of the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) and boast a proud record of representing the College at national and international venues such as the Nova Scotia Tattoo and the World Festival in Toronto, Canada and at Regal and Vice Regal functions.
"Our Pipes and Drums are unique to Scots and a valued part of our heritage with traditional links to our College's Presbyterian forefathers," The Scots College Principal Dr Ian PM Lambert said. "We are proud to be performing at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo once again."
